Sweet William

Dianthus barbatus, commonly known as Sweet William, is a popular biennial or short-lived perennial in the carnation family. It is prized for its dense, flat-topped clusters of small, fringed flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. The blooms come in a vibrant mix of colors, including deep reds, pinks, purples, whites, and bi-colors, often with a spicy, clove-like fragrance. Sweet William typically grows 12 to 24 inches tall and thrives in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. It is a favorite for cottage gardens and cutting bouquets, attracting butterflies and bees. While often grown as a biennial, it can self-seed to return year after year.
