Description

Whorled milkweed (Asclepias verticillata) is a native, herbaceous perennial known for its distinctive narrow leaves arranged in whorls around slender stems. It produces clusters of small, star-shaped white flowers in early to mid-summer, which are highly attractive to monarch butterflies and other pollinators. This hardy plant thrives in full sun and tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, including dry, sandy, or rocky sites, making it excellent for xeriscaping and prairie restoration. It spreads slowly via underground rhizomes but remains relatively compact, typically reaching 1 to 2 feet in height. Unlike some other milkweeds, it is not overly aggressive, offering a delicate, airy texture to gardens while supporting essential wildlife.
